Alex Dunne: Irish driver falls further behind in battle for F2 title
Alex Dunne’s Formula 2 title hopes suffered another blow after he crashed out of Sunday’s feature race in Baku.
The 19-year-old Irishman, who failed to score in his two races in Monza last week, had another frustrating feature race in Azerbaijan.
Rodin Motorsport driver Dunne was forced to retire from the race after a collision with Leonardo Fornaroli on the 25th lap.
The Italian received a 10-second time penalty for the crash, which dropped him to fifth overall.
American Jak Crawford, who had started in pole, held off a late surge from Joshua Duerksen to win his third feature race of the season, which moved him up to second in the standings, 19 points off championship leader Fornarol.
Dunne had fared better in Saturday’s sprint race, registering his seventh podium of the season to collect six points.
He battled back from a mistake at the first turn on lap 15 to come in third behind Luke Browning and winner Dino Beganovic.
The McLaren development driver remains fifth in the standings but is now 58 points behind Fornaroli with two rounds remaining.
He will race again in Lusail in the penultimate round of the 2025 campaign from 28-30 November as he attempts to close the gap on those ahead of him.
